As the capstone project of my UX course from General Assembly, I created an app concept for learning Japanese based around the following problem statement: The amount of kanji that needs to be learned in order to be literate makes learning the characters an intimidating yet necessary step for those looking to be able to read Japanese.

Because the goal of almost all those interviewed was to be able to read native materials like manga and light novels, my solution revolved around breaking down a page of manga to highlight a character for the user to draw with the correct stroke order.

Brand and UI imagery is centered around evoking elements of Japanese pop culture that are popular in the learning community without a direct reference like having an anime-style mascot or using other cultural imagery, especially since the app already revolved around having actual manga pages.
